Updating a farmhouse look

I loved my casual farmhouse dining room but it was just too dark since I have recently gone all white in my living room. The thought of starting over with white furniture was financially impossible and painting everything white seemed daunting. Besides, I still liked the black - it just needed to blend in better with my romantic living room whites. My fix? I purchased white plates and cups to put in the black china cabinet and added chair back slipcovers in a natural light fabric. Lauri Evans over at www.2chippys.blogspot.com made them for me after I saw one in her booth at the Lakewood Market last month. I'm making a few other changes like lighter lamps and accessories. It's been a frugal way to transform to a softer, lighter look.

That's a beautiful change! I absolutely love your ABC dishes. I've seen them in bits and pieces in the stores but it never would have crossed my mind to do all 26. Love it!

Vanessa and Bonnie - I didn't do anything to the table! I didn't paint it. That is how big a transformation those slips made. It pulled out the white in the wood. I am faux painter, but I bought the table this way. I'm pretty sure it is a home made job and they just put a light coat of white glaze over the wood. But it is exactly the same as when I bought it! Thanks!

You just have more sense then to pay that much!! Actually I bought them at Hobby Lobby about 4 weeks ago when they were on sale for $4.99 each. And the whole alphabet isn't really there...I skipped a few letters I didn't like! LOL! Thanks, Sue

Hi, I found my way here, again, this time from The Shabby Nest linky. I love the way you have lightened your dining area. Very pretty, and your dishes are interesting. I love a mix of farmhouse, farm and lakeside looks and lots of white, but can't do without my black pieces either. To lighten our black and stained china cabinet and to tie it in to our living room I have also collected some more white china pieces.
I became a follower and am off to check out more of your previous posts.

Sue, I've enjoyed reading your blog this evening. I was so surprised when I got to a post that mentioned Tuscaloosa. I am a Tuscaloosa girl transplanted in Indiana.

I love your decorating style and your decorating tips!
